Fence Calculator
Plan a wood fence: number of posts, rails and pickets, plus post-hole concrete bags, from the fence length and spacing.
How to use it
- Enter the total fence length.
- Posts are usually 6-8 ft apart.
- Enter picket width (a 1×6 is 5.5 in actual) and gap (0 for privacy).
- Each gate usually adds one post.
How it works
Sections = length ÷ spacing (rounded up); posts = sections + 1 + gates. Rails = sections × rails per section. Pickets = length × 12 ÷ (picket width + gap). Concrete: about two 50 lb bags of fast-setting mix per 4×4 post set 2 ft deep - more for deeper frost lines. Check property lines and HOA/permit rules first.
FAQ
How far apart should fence posts be?
6-8 ft for most wood fences; closer for heavy panels or windy sites.
How deep should fence posts be?
A common rule is one third of the post length in the ground, or below the frost line where required.
